Girl (7) found dead in abandoned Mariental house

While a post-mortem has not yet been carried out, the police suspect the girl was raped and beaten to death.
Shock waves ripped through Mariental after the body of a seven-year-old girl was found in an abandoned house at an old date farm near the town on Monday afternoon.
The little girl was naked and a bloody brick was found next to her body. Although a post-mortem examination has not yet been carried out to determine the cause of her death with certainty, the police suspect that she was raped and beaten to death with the brick.
She was a grade two learner at Mariental Primary School.
The deceased's father told the media that he left the house to go to work at around 17:00 and about two hours later, his mother reportedly called to find out where the girl was. A search was subsequently launched, which led to the discovery of the girl’s body.
According to the Namibian Police's coordinator for crime investigations in the Hardap Region, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay, the girl's body was found by a man who was gathering firewood in the area.
"It is sobering, but the police will not rest until the suspect is found," the Namibian Police spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi said yesterday.
Track down ‘evil person’
According to Clay, there are no suspects in the matter yet, and thus no one has been arrested so far.
Shikwambi requested the community of Mariental to cooperate with the police and share information. "Those who witnessed anything should not be afraid to speak to the police.
"As a community, we must intensify our efforts to track down this evil person who killed an innocent and vulnerable child," she urged.
