Girl (14) allegedly raped by father and cousin
After her father (44) was arrested on a charge of rape last week, a 14-year-old girl from Iino village in Onyaanya constituency told the police and family members that she was also allegedly sexually violated by a cousin earlier this year.
This is according to the mother of the victim, Selma (not her real name), who spoke about her daughter's alleged ordeal with Namibian Sun yesterday.
The victim, a minor, cannot be named to protect her identity.
According to the Oshikoto police, the alleged rape took place last Tuesday at around 20:00, when the girl’s father reportedly summoned her to his room and attacked her.
The suspect was allegedly caught in the act and the family decided to report the matter to the police.
He was subsequently arrested and appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where he was denied bail.
The case was postponed to 18 September while police continue their investigation.
'Rot in jail'
Selma on Sunday said she is disgusted by the alleged actions of the father and called on the state to ensure he "rots in jail".
She said they share three children: their eldest is 17, the alleged victim and their youngest child, who is 11.
The other two children stay with different family members.
“Since I heard the news, I could no longer eat. When I am walking around, I start to shiver and the thought is killing me. I can hardly fall asleep. I am so disgusted by what he did,” Selma said.
“Is he telling the world that there are no more women out there? Why our daughter? I trusted him and his family to raise my child in a good way and protect her, but instead he decided to do his evil things to my child," she said.
“He must rot in jail, he must never come back into society because if his own child is not safe around him, what about the other girl child in the community?”
Selma, who lives in a different but nearby village from her daughter, said that due to poverty, she allowed the child’s father to raise their daughter from the age of two.
“I thought he was in a better position to raise her; that is why he stayed with her for all these years. I never expected this to happen,” she said.
Selma also claimed that earlier this year, her daughter had informed her paternal grandmother that a cousin, who lived in the same household as her, had allegedly raped her, but the family chose not to report the incident to the police.
“What pains me is that the same grandmother who now reported the matter to the police after what the father did is the same person who kept quiet when my daughter reported an earlier rape incident to her,” an angry Selma said.
Wants daughter back
Selma also claimed that following the alleged incident, she asked for her daughter to return to her care, but the suspect's family turned down her request.
“My only challenge now is to get my child back from them. I told them I will need my child back since it’s not safe for her to live there, but they are refusing to give my child,” Selma said.
“Even if I am poor and unemployed, I am willing to hustle and feed my child. I just don’t want my child to live one more day nor an hour in that house. They disappointed me big time, and all I want is to live with my child," adding, "I hope she recovers from what she went through.”
Selma has urged the authorities to assist her in bringing her daughter back to her.
