An 11-year-old girl was assaulted and raped on Saturday by an unknown man in Ongwediva.

According to the police, the girl and her nine-year-old cousin were walking from her house in the Ohambungu village to a bakery when the man approached them and asked why they were insulting him.

He apparently slapped the girl, strangled her and pulled her into nearby bushes where he raped her. The suspect is unknown and no arrest has been made.

Argument turns deadly

In another incident on Saturday, a 28-year-old man was stabbed to death by his girlfriend in Otjomuise after an argument became physical.

Police reported that the woman apparently entered a room, followed by the deceased. She then picked up a knife and stabbed him in his back, head and the left side of his neck. He died at the scene.

In a separate incident, a 19-year-old man stabbed his 20-year-old cousin to death with an okapi knife on Saturday in the Etayi constituency’s Omhumbu village.

Joseph Nangolo was stabbed once in the neck and died on the spot, police said.

“According to eye witnesses, the suspect had an argument with the deceased before he stabbed him and fled the scene.”

The suspect has been arrested.

In other news, a 28-year-old man was arrested on Friday on the Outjo-Okaukuejo road after he was found in possession of a rhino horn - worth N$300 000 - when his vehicle was searched.

Suicide over WhatsApp

Several suicides were reported over the weekend, including that of a 12-year-old boy who hanged himself from a tree with a manufacturer strap on Saturday.

The boy – who hails from Otunganga village - was reportedly accused by his father of using his phone after the WhatsApp application was deleted from the device.

The man then told the boy to take the goats out to graze, but noticed that he was not going where he was told to.

The man followed his son’s footprints and found him hanging from a tree. The boy apparently left a suicide note written on the ground: “I'm not the one who deleted WhatsApp from Daddy's phone".
