A 25-year-old murder suspect who allegedly killed his mother with a hoe at Ekuli village on Sunday apparently went to four homesteads after the gruesome act and informed his neighbours about what he had done.

The accused, Jacob Sikerete Sadwere, told his neighbours to call the police so they can arrest him.

He appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after he was arrested for allegedly killing his mother, Annastasia Tjongano Likuwa (54). The incident took place at around 21:00.

Sadwere appeared before acting magistrate George Matsuib, who remanded the matter to 3 July to allow the accused to obtain legal representation.

Intoxicated

This week, Namibian Sun drove to Ekuli village – about 120 kilometres from Rundu - to uncover the motive behind the murder.

Sadwere’s traditional wife, who preferred to remain anonymous, said she witnessed the killing.

On the fateful day, the suspect left the house during the morning and only returned around 19:00, she said.

He was intoxicated and is known to smoke marijuana.

Upon his arrival, he demanded that his 14-year-old brother escort him to their grandmother’s house, which is nearby.

However, Likuwa intervened, which resulted in an argument.

“After an exchange of words, my mother in-law [Likuwa] took the younger brother and hid him in her room,” the suspect’s wife narrated.

‘I’ll kill you’

“Moments later, she [Likuwa] came out and started singing in front of her room, and then I saw my husband going into our room,” the wife said.

“He came out with a hoe and moved towards his mother and started to hit her with it. I tried to intervene but he looked at me and told me ‘I will kill you as well if you intervene’.

“It was at that moment that I took our three children and, together with the boy, we went to one of the aunts to inform her of what happened,” she said.

“When we returned, we found my mother-in-law lying on the ground and he [Sadwere] had left the scene. He went to about four nearby houses to tell them what he had done and that they should call the police.”

Hoe covered in blood

One of the neighbours the suspect informed of the incident told Namibian Sun that he arrived at their house with a hoe covered in blood.

“He told us that we should call the police because he killed his mother,” they narrated.

“I took him home where a crowd of people had gathered. All he did was walk around the homestead, go to the corpse and uncover the face of his mother. He was crying.

“When the police arrived, he took the hoe and placed it next to his mother’s body and they handcuffed him,” the neighbour said.

Orphaned teen

Meanwhile, the family said they are struggling to bury Likuwa as she had no official national documents and the funeral might be delayed because a number of issues, such as acquiring a death certificate.

They are appealing to Good Samaritans to assist them, adding that Likuwa’s youngest son – at just 14 years old – has now lost his mother and father in the space of 12 months.

The teen needs counselling, they said, after having seen the dead bodies of both his parents.

He also does not have official documents, which means he will not be able to benefit from the state’s orphan grant, the family lamented.

They asked for all the help they can get.
