Cannabis worth N$6.5m seized
Cannabis worth a total of N$6.5 million was confiscated in two busts this week.
In the first, a truck carrying cannabis weighing 120 kilograms - and worth about N$6 million - was intercepted in Windhoek’s Northern Industrial Area on Tuesday during an intelligence-led operation by the Namibian Police and the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA).
According to a joint statement issued yesterday, the truck entered Namibia from South Africa. Three Zimbabwean nationals - aged 34, 45 and 54 - have been arrested.
Meanwhile, during another bust yesterday, officials intercepted a truck near the Ariamsvlei border post.
“After a search, cannabis weighing 100.40 kilograms, valued at N$500 000, was found. The suspect, a 55-year-old South African national, was arrested and is expected to appear in the Karasburg Magistrate’s Court [today],” the statement read.
The Namibian Police and NamRA said they “remain committed to safeguarding society by preventing the illegal importation and distribution of controlled substances”.
“These operations underscore the crucial role that the two institutions play in protecting our society from the detrimental effects of drugs,” the statement read, adding that the police and the revenue agency “appreciate the public's cooperation in this regard and commend the dedicated officials for their swift and effective action”.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant and support our efforts by reporting any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies and adhering to the laws designed to maintain the well-being of our nation.”
