Boy dies in a well while fetching water
A 13-year-old boy died on Sunday afternoon after hitting his head on a rock while fetching water at a well in Evale village, Eengondi constituency in Oshikoto Region.
He has been identified as Elia Ndeutapo.
The accident happened around 14:00. It is alleged that Ndeutapo left his home in Oshikondeilwa village for Evale village to collect water from the well, as he usually did.
Oshikoto police regional commander, Commissioner Teopolina Kalompo-Nashikaku, said that at the water point, Ndeutapo agreed with others that he would be the one to go down and fetch water from the well to fill their containers.
As per their usual practice, Ndeutapo reportedly sat on a chair that was secured with a rope to lower him down into the well.
"Unfortunately, the others who were controlling the rope failed to hold his weight and dropped the iron while he was in the middle, a few metres away from the bottom of the well. That caused the deceased to hit the rocks and fall down to the bottom of the well, and he sustained head injuries,” she said.
His lifeless body was retrieved from the well by the community members.
The boy's body has been taken to the Omuthiya police mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Kalompo-Nashikaku said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the police following the accident.
