UK government trains female entrepreneurs

Elizabeth Joseph
Forty women have graduated from an eight-week training course on international trade, which was fully funded by the UK government.

The Trade Forward Southern Africa (TFSA) programme provides technical assistance and capacity building to address non-tariff-related barriers to trade in southern Africa.

Furthermore, the Export Trade Training is an online programme that covers seven modules, weekly coaching group sessions, and one-on-one mentorships with experts.

One of the facilitators, Sandra Mwiihangele, said this is their second intake, and applications for the third intake are now open.

"Both males and females can apply for this training, but it is only fully funded for female entrepreneurs," she said.

She added: "Our aim was to support and build this innovative and talented tribe of women who share a global vision to trade internationally."

'Chilli Queen' owner, Frieda Asino, who graduated from the TFSA training, described her time as nothing short of amazing.

She said the things she learned during her training were things she never knew about.

The deputy minister of industrialisation and trade, Verna Sinimbo, said that it is admirable to see women take part in such initiatives.

"It's commendable to note that the TFSA is one of the mechanisms through which the UK is enhancing partnerships with both the Namibian government and the private sector to create a conducive economic environment," she said.

Sinimbo noted that the initiatives will help local businesses possess the needed capacity to export their products internationally.
