Telecom Namibia (TN) has reported an investment of N$35.5 million for 2023 and 2024 to complete eight projects primarily connecting underserved areas to the fibre optic network.

The company said it plans to invest an additional N$27 million in the network over the next year.

“The goal is to modernise Namibia’s communication infrastructure by replacing outdated copper infrastructure, which is prone to theft and sabotage,” Telecom stated.

Through these projects, a total of 233 858 metres of fibre optic cables have been installed, connecting 7 838 properties to the network.

“Telecom Namibia’s expanding fibre optic network is poised to revolutionise various sectors of the Namibian economy,” the company added.

The improved connectivity is expected to benefit tourism by attracting more visitors, including digital nomads, while facilitating communication between businesses and tourists. Industrial development will also accelerate through digital transformation and remote work enabled by the high-speed fibre optic network.

Small and medium enterprises are anticipated to gain empowerment, fostering entrepreneurship and economic growth. Sectors such as health, education, real estate and agriculture stand to benefit significantly from improved internet access.
