The Safland Property Group plans to build Lüderitz’s first shopping centre, with preparations for the 10 500-square-metre project – estimated at N$210 million – already underway.

The shopping centre will be located on Bay Road (B4) and be easily accessible. Additionally, a 50-bed lodge will be constructed to operate independently of the shopping centre.

"We are pleased with the progress on the long-awaited shopping centre and the new jobs and services it will bring," said Lüderitz mayor Phillipus Balhao recently.

He called on interested tenants to seize the opportunity.

Two hundred jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, with 250 permanent positions expected to be created in the long term. Tenants will be able to move in in August 2026, according to current information, and the official opening is planned for 1 November 2026.

Shoprite will be the anchor tenant, and Safland is negotiating with interested parties for the remaining 26 stores. Leasing director Charles Fourie said that 70% of the space must be leased before construction begins. The remaining 30% will remain for new tenants. Food and other catering services for the 50-bed lodge will be provided by Butchers Block, one of the tenants in the mall.

The Lüderitz mall is one of several projects in Safland's second development wave, which also includes malls in Oshakati, Katima Mulilo, Nkurenkuru, Eenhana and Oranjemund. Safland has previously developed many well-known shopping centres in Namibia, including Grove Mall, Gwashamba Mall in Ondangwa, Rundu Mall and Dunes Mall. The company is currently building Goreangab Mall with Oryx Properties, which will be operated by Oryx upon completion.

A decision on a co-investor for the Lüderitz project is expected later this month.
