Pepkor, FP Du Toit partner in distribution centre
...Set to become country’s second biggest
The development is worth approximately N$180 million.
Transport company FP Du Toit and retailer Pepkor recently broke ground for the construction of what will become the second biggest distribution centre in Namibia.
The project - which is being managed by the Safland Group, the developers of the Gwashamba Mall in Ondangwa and Otjiwarongo Town Square - is being financed through its special purpose vehicle, the Frontier Property Trust.
The development, which will cover 14 655 square metres and is located near the A1 dual-carriageway between Windhoek and Okahandja, is worth approximately N$180 million.
Safland director Kallie van der Merwe said the project was “borne out of the good relationships Safland has built over the years”.
“The main reason we were able to secure this development is because of the 30-year relationship with the Pepkor Group and, to that, we now add FP Du Toit,” Van Der Merwe said.
According to him, developing and managing properties serves as Safland’s main interest.
“The favourite from our perspective remains property development. We have an impact on society, on communities. When we started, we developed the Grove Mall of Namibia, which changed people’s lives.”
Growth
Pepkor asset manager Shawn Bernard said the addition of a distribution centre was driven by the growth the retailing giant was experiencing.
“We used to rent a distribution centre and our business has grown so much that it has required us to build a distribution centre in Namibia.”
The addition will improve Pepkor’s ability to service its stores in Namibia, he added.
“The reason why we are expanding our distribution centre is to enable us to service the growth of our stores. We have constantly been seeing growth in Namibia; we have seen enough growth that justifies our ability to expand,” he said.
Pepkor owns the Pep, Ackermans, Incredible Connection and HiFi Corporation brands, while FP Du Toit is a transport and logistics company.
