Malaysian Durian and Rambutan Fiesta explores trade

Mariud Ngula
To explore enhancing trade possibilities between Namibia and Malaysia, the High Commission of Malaysia, in collaboration with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), held a Durian and Rambutan fiesta in Windhoek on Monday.

Acting High Commissioner of Malaysia, Dato’ Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, treated various delegates and potential buyers to Malaysian delicacies.

“We want a greater influx of these fruits into Namibia. Durian and rambutan are the main Malaysian fruits in demand, exported to various countries, including China, Korea and Japan, due to their high demand in those countries,” Rameez said.

Other than exploring trade opportunities, he said they also aim to share their delicacies with the world. “We want people to enjoy Malaysian fruit products. We are joined by potential buyers and delegates from Spar Namibia, Fresh Supermarkets Namibia, Taiwan Food Supermarket, Avani Hotel, The Village Garden, the High Commission of India and the embassy of Indonesia,” he said.

Rameez added that Jim Feng of the Taiwan Food Supermarket has already imported 100 kg of durian into Namibia from Malaysia and plans to import more.
