Katutura Expo cancelled due to lack of funds
The 2022 Katutura Expo, which was set to take place from 31 August to 3, has been cancelled due to a shortage of funds.
According to the regional councillor for Katutura Central constituency, Vezemba Katjaimo, the expo needed at least N$500 000 and they only managed to secure 10% of that amount.
"The expo is of such a magnitude that we needed at least half a million dollars. We managed to secure sponsorship of N$50 000. What am I going to do with that?" Katjaimo said during a telephonic interview.
Although the committee planned on hosting a fundraiser on 18 August, it wouldn't have made a difference.
"I don't think it would've helped. We didn't even sell enough tickets for the gala event," he said.
Tickets were sold at N$10 000 for groups, N$900 for couples, and N$500 for a single ticket.
Revival
At the launch of the 2022 expo, Katjaimo said that the expo's main goal is to provide a platform for revival, especially for SMEs that suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He added that the expo would focus on industries that could create employment, improve food security, produce innovative means of production through information and communication technology, and improve the standard of living for Namibians.
The councillor said they have decided to start planning for the 2023 Katutura Expo and will not sit idle.
He implored companies and sponsors to continue their support of the expo. He further encouraged the attendance of all Namibians because of the apolitical nature of the expo.
