Bursary scheme to benefit 14 students each year

Elizabeth Joseph
Fourteen students are set to benefit from a Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) bursary scheme each year. The bursaries, launched on Wednesday, are valued at a total of N$200 000 annually.

The bursary scheme is open to all Namibian citizens younger than 25 who wish to pursue their tertiary education at a recognised institution.

The candidates must have a Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSCO) and should have 30 points or above in their end-of-year results.

According to the company's chairperson, Bryan Eiseb, an added advantage will be given to qualifications in the diamond industry value chain.

"This will include, but not be limited to, fields like data analytics, artificial intelligence, industrial engineering, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), among others," Eiseb said during the launch.

Abundance

In Windhoek, five schools have been selected as beneficiaries of this bursary initiative: Jan Mohr Secondary School, A. Shipena Secondary School, Augustineum Secondary School, Khomas High School, and Westmont High School.

Education minister Itah Kandjii-Murangi, during her keynote address, said Namdia's initiative will help accommodate the one million youth population as estimated by the Namibia Statistics Agency for 2027.

"This presents us with an abundance of resources and Namdia's investment in this precious resource will permeate for generations to come and present growth opportunities for the nation that only education can generate," she said.

Kandjii-Murangi further encouraged corporate companies to follow in the footsteps of Namdia and invest in youth empowerment initiatives.

"Prioritising investments into initiatives such as access to tertiary education will increase the potential of employment and will guarantee a quality workforce," the minister said.

As proof of their commitment, NAMDIA gifted stationery to the value of N$100 000 to the five schools present.

Each school will receive N$20 000 worth of stationery.

Applicants who are interested in applying for a bursary are urged to download the application from NAMDIA's website and submit it before 31 October.
