Come Sunday, 3 December, jazz lovers can prepare themselves for the 'Jazz on the Lawn' event, where well-known jazz artists Judith Sephuma, Don Vino, Fu Jazz, Gyzie and Litisha will be performing at Windhoek High School's Vegkop stadium.

As one of South Africa's most loved jazz artists, Sephuma needs almost no introduction. This singer is a prominent figure in the colourful scene of South African jazz, captivating audiences with her soulful voice, charismatic stage presence and ability to weave diverse musical influences together.

Transcending genres

Born in Polokwane in 1971, Sephuma reflects the rich cultural diversity of her homeland. Her early exposure to gospel music laid the foundation for her powerful and emotional vocal style. She later honed her skills at the University of Cape Town's College of Music, where she expanded her repertoire and embraced the fusion of jazz, Afro-pop and traditional South African sounds.

Her music transcends genres and seamlessly blends elements of her heritage with contemporary influences.

One of her breakthrough moments came with the release of her debut album, ‘A Cry, A Smile, A Dance’, in 1997. The album showcased her versatility, with a mix of original compositions and classical music. Sephuma's ability to convey deep emotions through her music resonated with audiences, earning her high praise.

Over the years, she has continued to develop as an artist and collaborate with local and international musicians. Her discography includes celebrated albums such as ‘New Beginnings’, ‘The Experience Live in Concert’ and ‘One Word’. Each album serves as proof of her growth and her commitment to push the boundaries of South African jazz.
