Sax in the City: Theresia Philipp joins forces with The Yesterdaye & Zingerwingz
The Goethe-Institut Namibia will host a special cross-cultural musical collaboration called Sax In the City on Tuesday, 11 March featuring renowned German saxophonist and composer Theresia Philipp.
Sax In the City will be an evening of creativity, experimentation, and cultural fusion of jazz, improvised music, and contemporary sounds with local Namibian talent, including The Yesterdaye and vocalist Angelina Akawa AKA ZingerWingz.
Hailing from Germany, Theresia Philipp has long been a driving force in the European jazz scene, moving between jazz, contemporary, and improvised music. Reflecting on her journey, Theresia says, “My musical journey began in my hometown in Germany, where I played in a marching band and later attended a music boarding school. Now, I work as a freelance musician, performing with my band and composing for various ensembles and orchestras.”
With a passion for cultural exchange, Theresia sees music as a universal language that brings people together. “For me, the most important aspect of traveling and being in the world is connecting with people and cultures. Music is my way of building bridges, and I’m incredibly inspired by the diversity of Namibian cultures.” This midweek performance is the result of a unique collaboration between Theresia and local Namibian artists. The saxophonist first visited Namibia over two years ago and immediately felt a deep connection to the local music scene. “I noticed that the way of working here is a bit different — there’s a remarkable sense of ease. I’ve rarely made music as freely and without fear as I did during my time in Namibia,” she shares.
Working alongside The Yesterdaye and Zingerwingz has opened new creative possibilities for Theresia Philipp. “Together, we bring diverse musical backgrounds to the stage. It’s about listening, respecting each other’s styles, and creating an organic exchange where everyone has their own space to contribute.”
Audiences can look forward to a concert that will feature a blend of jazz, pop, soul, experimental sounds, and powerful vocal performances. “We’ll celebrate life with intensity and emotion,” Theresia adds. “There will be moments of improvisation, and who knows, something completely unexpected might happen.”
