Media personality Pombili Shilongo - known for her vibrant presence on entertainment TV - is charting a new course with her latest venture, ‘Africa is Waiting’, set to premiere on Tuesday, 19 March, on One Africa TV.

In an interview with tjil, Shilongo shared that her transition from the glitz and glamour of entertainment to the genuine, raw narratives of parenting was spurred by her own experiences as a new mother. Faced with the challenge of blending traditional parenting wisdom with the realities of a digital era, she identified a significant gap in media offerings.

"What we usually see on social media platforms has very little to offer in terms of guiding new parents.

“This realisation led to the birth of ‘Africa is Waiting’, a show aimed at fostering a community that supports and learns from one another on the parenting journey,” she said.

She maintained that the vision behind the show is ambitious yet grounded. Shilongo aims to leverage stories from notable figures in society, understanding that these narratives have the power to inspire and resonate with a broad audience.

Nurturing Africa's children

“The show acts as a conduit, not just for sharing parenting insights, but for laying the groundwork for a future where Africa's children are nurtured into prosperous leaders and innovators,” she said.

On the guests featured, Shilongo shared that season one brought a myriad of voices to the forefront, each sharing unique, enlightening perspectives on parenting. From parents juggling shift work to those emphasising the importance of communication and presence in their children's lives, the show has highlighted the diversity of parenting experiences. Shilongo finds it impossible to single out a favourite guest, as each has contributed significantly to the show's rich advice and insights.

Reflecting on her journey with ‘Africa is Waiting’, Shilongo shared how the show has transformed her own views on parenting.

The stories and challenges shared by guests have underscored the vital role of community support in raising a child. Another particularly poignant takeaway came from a guest who spoke about balancing work commitments with being present for their child's milestones.

“I have learnt that it is important to have things you chose not to compromise on as a parent, and others you can, as there are moments about a child’s life that once you have missed them, you can’t get them back,” she said.
