The creative industry in Namibia has paid tribute to the life and legacy of Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the country’s founding president, who passed away on Saturday, 8 February. Artists, models and cultural organisations have shared heartfelt tributes, recognising Nujoma's unwavering dedication to Namibia’s liberation and nation-building efforts.

For many in the creative sector, Nujoma was more than a statesman – he was a symbol of resilience, vision and hope. His impact extended beyond politics into the very soul of the nation’s artistic and cultural identity.

A guiding light

Award-winning musician King Tee Dee reflected on his personal encounters with Nujoma, describing them as moments filled with wisdom and warmth.

“I saw not just a leader but a man who truly cared for his people and their future. His words resonated deeply, reminding me that true leadership is about service, resilience and vision,” he said.

“Your legacy will forever be a guiding light, not just for Namibia but for all who believe in freedom and unity,” King Tee Dee said.

His legacy stands tall

Miss Namibia 2024, Prisca Anyolo, echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the late leader’s unwavering commitment to the nation.

“A giant has fallen, but his legacy stands tall. His unwavering dedication, fearless leadership and boundless love for Namibia laid the foundation for the freedom and peace we cherish today,” she said.

“You gave your all for Namibia, sacrificing so much so that generations after you could walk with pride and dignity.”

Anyolo added that Nujoma's vision and patriotism should continue to inspire future generations to build a stronger, united and prosperous Namibia.

A hero’s legacy

The Museums Association of Namibia (MAN) issued a statement mourning the loss of “one of Namibia’s greatest heroes.”

“For never wavering in his dedication to Namibia’s achievement of independence and the prosperity of Namibia since, and all he has sacrificed in this pursuit, we are eternally grateful,” said Beverley Alexander, MAN chairperson of MAN.

Award-winning artist Exit described Nujoma as a “beacon of hope and resilience.”

“His enduring commitment to freedom and equality continues to inspire us every day. His warmth, wisdom and unwavering belief in his people left an indelible mark on our hearts,” Exit said. “Let us celebrate his remarkable contributions and cherish the profound impact he had on our nation and beyond.”
