Namibian artists pay tribute to Sam Nujoma through music
Following the passing of Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma, a wave of tribute songs has emerged, with artists Samuel Shines, Big Ben, and Ally Tobias leading the charge in honoring his legacy.
Samuel Shines’ song, titled ‘Tangi Kuku,’ was released this week and is accompanied by a video of the artist performing in what appears to be a home studio. The song, uploaded to YouTube on Sunday, 9 February, has already amassed close to 4,000 views. “This tribute is a heartfelt salute to a visionary leader, a fearless revolutionary, and the father of our nation’s freedom,” Shines said. “Through my song, I honor Dr. Sam Nujoma’s unwavering sacrifices and indomitable spirit, keeping his legacy alive while inspiring hope in the hearts of all Namibians.”
Big Ben, another celebrated Namibian musician, released ‘Calling Your Name Again,’ a soulful homage to Nujoma. Similarly, Ally Tobias contributed ‘Amazing Grace,’ a reflection on loss and remembrance. “In light of the passing of the founding president of our beautiful country, Namibia, I felt compelled to honor his memory. Death has a way of reminding us of our loved ones who have also left this earth. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” Tobias shared.
Ras Sheehama, a veteran of Namibia’s Afro-reggae scene, described Nujoma as an “undisputed revolutionary.” Comparing him to figures such as Fidel Castro, Sheehama recalled his encounters with Nujoma at SWAPO gatherings. He also revealed that while in exile in Nigeria, he wrote a song titled ‘Brave Shepherd’ dedicated to Nujoma, though the demo was lost upon his return.
As the nation mourns, music remains a powerful vehicle for remembrance, ensuring that Nujoma’s legacy endures in the hearts of many.
