Namibia Tourism Expo reaches for the stars

Exploring the cosmos
It's almost time for the Namibia Tourism Expo, which offers exciting experiences for young and old every year.

The team from the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT) will entertain children and adults, taking them through the cosmos in a mobile planetarium at this year’s Namibia Tourism Expo.

According to project organiser Yolanda Nel from Network Television (NTV), this is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about astronomy.

"I’ve been to the planetarium a few times, and it's incredible to see how small a part the earth actually is; and how small we really are."

School groups have already been invited to take advantage of the opportunity, and adults can buy tickets to be part of the experience themselves.

More than 13 000 people have already visited AMT’s mobile planetarium, with more than 10 000 learners among them.

According to Zandre Duvenhage from AMT, it's a wonderful experience for children. The planetarium was donated to the University of Namibia (Unam) in 2022, and the aim of the project is to stimulate young people's interest in science.

Earlier this year, the AMT team received the Annie Maunder Medal for outreach from the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for the work done with the planetarium.

The project aims to establish the first millimetre telescope in Africa. This telescope will be erected at Gamsberg as part of the Event Horizon Telescope network, which captured the black hole in 2019.

Tickets for the planetarium at the expo can be purchased via etickets.my.na for a specific time slot. Limited tickets available.

The Namibia Tourism Expo will take place on 24 to 26 April at the Windhoek Country Club Resort.
