Lüderitz day care gets vibrant makeover by German artist
A collaborative initiative between the towns of Leipzig in Germany and Lüderitz will see a renowned German artist transform a children's day care in the Namibian harbour town into a work of art.
“We cannot contain our excitement about hosting Michael Fischer-Art from 5 to 10 February. The project will capture the attention of everybody as it comes to life. This is a massive privilege for our little town, the community and we are grateful to have been considered,” said Lüderitz mayor Phillipus Balhao.
During his visit, Fisher will leave his mark on Peek-a-book Day Care Centre with his unique and vibrant artwork. The centre recently relocated from 203 Ring Street to a building on Bahnhof Street due to expansion.
Balhao thanked Kai Uwe Döhler, the driving force in finding partnerships from 'Better Berlin' in Leipzig, for his efforts and support towards Lüderitz.
Changing lives
Hardly any other artist in the world has painted as much surface as Fisher (Zeit, 2011) and his art-in-building projects cannot be limited to surfaces alone.
He also bathes bridges, playgrounds and much more in colour. Fischer-Art began a project that once again shows how art can change not only walls but also lives on 6 January. At an orphanage in Grünau in Berlin, he transformed empty, white walls into colourful works of art that give the children a new perspective.
The orphanage was the perfect place for Fischer's work, with white walls waiting to be filled with life. “
It is always exciting to hit somewhere where everything is really white at the beginning. That's exactly where the story is needed,” Fischer said and set himself the task of intervening in such places, precisely because the means for creative design are often lacking.
Social commentary
Born in Leipzig, Fischer has always wanted to make the world more colourful and takes a socially critical approach to the environment in his art and classifies his work as "market economy realism" in line with socially critical realism.
He is a multidisciplinary artist whose paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions in many galleries in and around Germany. His artistic expression is inspired by pop art and photorealism. Fisher favours metal, stainless steel and aluminium in his large-scale sculptures. His painterly compositions are most often created using acrylics on canvas.
