Exhibition shares childhood memories

The Project Room Gallery's first local exhibition of the year opens tonight at 18:00

Lynette Musukubili describes her first solo exhibition, entitled Bukalo Stories, as follows: "It's about our lives and growing up earlier in the village. For me, these traditions have created lifelong memories. My most cherished childhood memories can be linked back to certain traditions that I shared with my family."

Bukalo is a village located in the Zambezi region, 43 km from Katima Mulilo.

After completing her school career in 2016, Lynette began her academic journey at the University of Namibia pursuing a Diploma in Local Government Studies. Halfway through, however, she realised: "I'm too soft for politics ... I knew I didn't belong there and that I'd be more at home in a creative course." Knowing that her family would not support her financially if she gave up, she took a leap of faith and applied for a scholarship through the National Arts Council of Namibia.

While she already knew crochet as an art form from childhood - through her mother's handiwork - Lynette found it "boring" and never paid much attention to it. “Now that I've rediscovered crochet, I finally understand why my mom has been doing it all these years! Crocheting is quite therapeutic for me - and I can watch TV, talk to friends or relax on the couch while keeping my hands busy."

As part of the exhibition, the gallery is offering a crochet workshop with Lynette on Saturday 8 April. The pieces created during this workshop will form part of an installation that will be on view at the gallery for the last two weeks of the exhibition.

Bukalo Stories can be viewed until Saturday 22 April.
