Dreas bridges tradition and innovation with Common Degu EP
Dreas, the multifaceted Namibian artist, producer, DJ, and community builder, has once again showcased his boundless creativity with the release of his latest project, the ‘Common Degu’ EP.
This two-track Afrohouse offering, released in December 2024, seamlessly blends rhythm, drums, and cultural fusion to create a compelling auditory experience.
“Each track stands as a testament to the artist’s creative vision, exploring themes of love, self-worth, and the vibrancy of Namibian cultural heritage,” said Vernon van Wyk, Dreas’s A&R Manager. “The concise nature of the EP makes it perfect for both the dance floor and a soulful listen.
The EP’s tracks, ‘Right for Me’ featuring Akoune and ‘Common Degu’ featuring Gazza, demonstrate Dreas’s ability to weave infectious beats with lyrical storytelling. These songs draw from the rich soundscapes of Afrohouse and the modern evolution of 3-Step Afrohouse.
‘Right for Me’ is an emotive anthem exploring the delicate balance of love and self-worth. With Akoune’s soulful vocals, Imms Nicolau’s vibrant guitar riffs, and Dreas’s meticulous production, the track offers a sonic journey that is both meditative and danceable.
The title track, ‘Common Degu,’ featuring Namibian music icon Gazza, is a celebration of African storytelling. The song marries traditional rhythms, nursery rhymes, chants, and cultural nuances with a modern Afrohouse framework, bridging Namibia’s rich heritage and contemporary sounds. “Working with Gazza was a dream come true,” Dreas shared. “He’s a cultural icon, a pioneer, and a living testament to the heights Namibian music can reach. His ability to connect with audiences and tell resonant stories elevated ‘Common Degu’ to new heights.”
For Dreas, the collaboration with Gazza signifies more than music. “This project contributes to the ongoing narrative of what Namibian music represents on a global stage,” he noted.
The ‘Common Degu’ EP is now available on all major streaming platforms, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in a celebration of culture, rhythm, and self-expression.
