Daymenmet breaks the mould: From Oshakati to TikTok stardom
The making of a Namibian sound
At 27, the self-taught producer is redefining Namibian sound with his viral hits and a vision to take his music global.
Oshakati-born musician Hophni Mathias, better known by his stage name Daymenmet, is riding a wave of virality that few emerging artists experience in their early careers.
At 27, he has quickly become one of Namibia’s most talked-about names on social media, with his distinct sound capturing the attention of TikTok users and music lovers across the country.
Speaking to tjil, Daynmenmet said his interest in music began at the age of 12, when he started writing songs as a form of expression.
But it was after a personal setback – failing Grade 12 – that he began to pursue music more seriously. “I recorded my first song when I was 18,” he recalled. “But I was never satisfied with how other producers made my music sound. So in early 2023, I took matters into my own hands and learnt how to produce myself.”
That decision proved pivotal.
Unifying energy
Later that year, he created what would become his breakout single, ‘The Boss’ – a track that has since turned him into a household name among Namibia’s younger digital generation. “I’m so grateful,” he says of the attention his music has received. “It’s a dream come true. My efforts were never in vain.”
While Daynmenmet’s music is often described as catchy and resonant, he resists being boxed into any one genre. Instead, he speaks passionately about building a unique Namibian sound – one that speaks to his own identity while appealing to a broader global audience. “I’ve always wanted to create a sound that can accommodate all Namibians and the world at large,” he explains. “It fits within what I call ‘One Blood Sounds’ – a unifying energy.”
As for the future, Daynment is dreaming big. “I want my music to take over Namibia and spread across the world,” he says, with the quiet confidence of someone who’s already tasted viral success. His debut album, also titled ‘The Boss’, is already out, and fans can look forward to accompanying music videos and a follow-up album in the near future.
If there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that Daymenmet isn’t just chasing fame – he’s building a legacy, one beat at a time.
