NAU celebrates stronger ties with stakeholders

Union hopeful for a rainy 2025

Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) officials say they had the privilege this year of travelling across the country to visit farmers in all regions, gaining a clear understanding of the situation on the ground and forging stronger partnerships.

In his festive season message, NAU president Thinus Pretorius said these visits provided the union with valuable insights into the state of the country's agricultural sector.

"It was certainly not an easy year. If we think about how we had to plan for the drought, coupled with other challenges such as importing fodder from South Africa and keeping markets open, we can be grateful that Meatco came to the table this year. Producers received better prices in Namibia than in South Africa," Pretorius said in his Christmas message.

Important partners

He said one of the major highlights of the past year includes stronger relationships with stakeholders.

"As a bargaining organisation for its members, relationships are important for the NAU. What the NAU was able to build with President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was one of two standout achievements this year. NAU got to know her better and began to build a valuable bridge," Pretorius emphasised.

Nandi-Ndaitwah attended the NAU agri-braai in Gobabis in June as the guest speaker where she was warmly welcomed by farmers.

The second outstanding relationship, according to Pretorius, is the one between the NAU and the other three agricultural unions, which was strengthened in 2024 with mutual respect and trust.

"I hope loved ones are safely together this festive season. Farmers need people to keep their tanks full. It is also a farmer's responsibility to fill the tanks of others. I hope you are with loved ones and appreciate the environment you are in this festive season," Pretorius said.

He added: “May 2025 be a rainy year, for which the signs look very promising. May everyone have enough of what they seek, and may Namibians only build on the peace experienced over the past three decades."
