Lung disease breaks out near Opuwo
The Directorate of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture announced that lung disease broke out on 1 July at the Okapundja settlement, 51 km east of Opuwo.
"So far, the disease has been detected in one herd of 30 cattle, where eight cattle tested positive and one cow died," according to a statement issued by the acting chief veterinary officer, Dr. Johannes Shoopala.
Lung disease occurs in cattle and buffalo and is highly contagious with a mortality rate of up to 50%.
“It cannot be treated and infected cattle remain a source of further infection for other cattle. Humans are not known to be susceptible to lung disease, so there is no risk to public health."
