#JustIn: Auction prices plunge to new lows
Auction prices for livestock last week reached the lowest levels since the start of the last rainy season - and probably longer.
A smaller demand for Namibian weaners from South Africa as well as a below average rainy season are probably the biggest reasons for this.
Since January, the price for tollies and heifers has fallen from N$39.74 per kg and N$35.25 per kg to N$29.09 and N$26.29 per kg respectively. This represents reductions of N$10.65 and N$8.96 respectively.
The price of storage steers and heifers also fell by N$5.94 per kg and N$6.34 respectively, while auction prices for goats fell below N$1 000 per goat for the first time last week. In the week of March 27, goats achieved an average price of only N$943 at national auctions.
In contrast, an average of N$1,345 per goat was paid at national auctions in May last year.
The price for cows, lean to fat, fell from N$24.16 to N$32.66 per kg in January to N$18.74 to N$27.72 per kg in the past week.
The average price of cows with calves also fell over the period from N$11,577 to N$11,191, while in May last year it was still at N$12,992.
Auction price for sheep also fell from more than N$32 per kg in January, to around N$30 per kg in the past week.
Slaughter prices generally improved, with Beefcor paying the highest price of between N$62.00 and N$64.00 per kg for A to C grades.
