While total year-to-date beef exports showed an increase of more than 40% compared to 2023 volumes, it showed a decline in October.

Cattle marketing, meanwhile, dropped by 1.2% on a year-on-year basis during October, with 19 659 cattle marketed compared to 19 906 marketed during the corresponding period of 2023.

According to statistics provided by the Livestock and Livestock Products Board (LLPB), both live exports of animals and slaughtering by B and C class abattoirs declined by 22.2% and 30.6%, respectively.

On the meat trading front, beef exports totalled more than 1.4 million kg during October this year, decreasing by 11.3% compared to last year October, while bringing the year-to-date total beef exports to various destinations to more than 20.7 million kg, 44% higher than the 2023 volumes.

Market destinations

According to the LLPB, year-to-date, the European Union remains Namibia’s biggest market for beef exports.

The EU market absorbed 55.3% of total beef exports, while South Africa, the UK and Norway took up 20.4%, 14.5% and 7.21%, respectively, as top destinations.

Beef imports, primarily in the form of processed and offal products, increased by 10.5% year-to-date.

This points to an increase in demand for particularly locally processed beef products, which make up 75.8% of the 2024 year-to-date beef import basket, the LLPB said.

The LLPB said year-on-year cattle prices south of the veterinary cordon fence (VCF) rebounded during October.

Weaner prices south of the VCF averaged at N$28.67/kg during the period under review relative to an average of N$24.24/kg recorded during the corresponding month of 2023.

Tolly prices north of the VCF, on the other hand, declined during October 2024 and averaged N$22.40/kg.
