NEWS IN SHORT

The Africa Water Facility plays a critical role in sustainable water management by accelerating project preparations and downstream investments in line with current and future international strategies.

This was highlighted by agriculture and water minister and chairperson of the African Water Facility, Calle Schlettwein, at the opening session of the 24th African Water Facility Governing Council meeting held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, last week.

Schlettwein said since its establishment in 2016, the African Water Facility has served as a critical platform for promoting sustainable water management in Africa and improving access to clean water and sanitation, particularly for vulnerable populations in urban areas.

The minister highlighted that a key topic to be discussed at the meeting is the development of the facility's new investment promotion strategy.

He said preparations are underway for a new strategic phase for the facility for 2026 to 2030.

“As we take stock of the past and prepare for the future of the Africa Water Facility, please let me stress that I see our deliberations as of utmost importance for the future of increased access to water and sanitation in Africa.”
