In a significant stride towards advancing development efforts in southern Africa, the United States of America (USA) has renewed its collaboration with the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The partnership, orchestrated through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to catalyse positive change and elevate the quality of life of the region's residents.

The five-year agreement, with a total USAID contribution of approximately N$4 billion and an initial commitment of N$654 million, endeavours to deliver “citizen-centered governance and enterprise-driven development to achieve sustained and inclusive growth, peace and stability throughout the region”.

Howard Van Vranken, US ambassador to Botswana and representative to SADC, said: "The United States government is committed to the principle that SADC and SADC member states must lead their own development journey. We will work to foster a relationship that strengthens equal partnership for the benefit of all".

Elias Magosi, SADC executive secretary, commended the alignment of this initiative with the SADC regional indicative strategic development plan (2020-2030) and the SADC Vision 2050, underscoring the partnership's resonance with regional aspirations.
