A vehicle accident near Uis has claimed the lives of two women and left eight others injured, following a crash on the gravel road between Uis and Omaruru on Wednesday.

The accident occurred during the lunch hour, about two kilometres from Uis. According to Erongo police’s spokesperson, Senior Inspector Judith Shomongula, the driver of the vehicle, Andreas Tjai-Tjai Mau (24), was operating the vehicle without a valid driving licence.

“He reportedly lost control of the pickup while navigating a curve. The vehicle swerved and overturned after hitting a ditch,” she said.

One passenger, identified as Caroline Tanises (27), was killed instantly at the scene. Another passenger, Gift Tourob (33), succumbed to her injuries later at Omaruru State Hospital.

Six individuals, including the unlicensed driver, sustained serious injuries. Three were transferred to Windhoek for further medical treatment, while the remaining three are being treated at Omaruru State Hospital. Two additional passengers suffered slight injuries and are also recovering at the same hospital.

“All next of kin have been informed. The incident has been registered and is being investigated under charges of culpable homicide, reckless and/or negligent driving, and driving without a valid licence,” noted Shomongula.
