Teen dies after climbing power pole at Omuthiya
A 16-year-old Angolan cattle herder died instantly on Wednesday from a fatal electrocution after he climbed an electricity pole. The teenager died while tending to livestock in an open pasture at Omuthiya, in the Oshikoto Region.
Oshikoto community policing subdivision Chief Inspector Ellen Nehale-Kangulu reported that another cattle herder in the area heard a loud sound – the fatal electricity discharge – around the time of the incident.
“Upon investigating, he discovered the lifeless body of the deceased hanging from the power pole. The witness, who was able to identify the deceased, ran to the police station to report the incident,” she said.
Nehale-Kangulu said Northern Electricity Distributor (Nored) officials were summoned to the scene to safely remove the body from the utility pole.
The boy’s next of kin has not yet been informed.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Nored spokesperson Simon Lukas said the deceased was electrocuted after he climbed up a 22 kV overhead line pole.
“As we process this heartbreaking loss, we would like again to remind the members of the public that electricity is very dangerous and they should stay away from electrical infrastructure at all times,” Lukas said.
