News in short

In a full report on a fatal helicopter crash - which took place near Swakopmund in July 2023 - the transport ministry's directorate of aircraft accident and incident investigations found that the aircraft did not have a certificate of airworthiness.

According to the report, the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority failed to follow its own processes when information about the helicopter's airworthiness was not requested from South Africa, where the helicopter is registered.

Lead investigator Ben Engelbrecht explained that in some cases, there are planes that are allowed to be imported into Namibia without airworthiness certificates, such as those for display in museums.

The crash claimed the lives of pilot Jacques Jacobs (54) and aviation engineer Dirk von Weidts (29).
