Shorts: DRC trucker arrested over fatal accident

A tragic accident on the B1 road, approximately 35 kilometres from Grunau, resulted in the death of a 62-year-old woman and serious injuries to two others.

The incident occurred at around 09h10 when the driver of a white Toyota VVti pickup, travelling from Grunau towards Keetmanshoop, attempted to overtake a truck. As the pickup was returning to the left lane, the truck allegedly swerved into the right lane, colliding with the pickup and causing it to overturn.

The 54-year-old Namibian male driver and another passenger sustained serious but stable injuries and were transported to Keetmanshoop State Hospital. Sadly, Theresa Rooi, a 62-year-old Namibian female passenger, was declared dead at the scene. Her remains were taken to Keetmanshoop State Mortuary for an autopsy. The next of kin have been informed.

Following the collision, the driver of the truck, a 55-year-old male DRC national, failed to stop at the scene. Police later traced and intercepted his Camion Renault truck at Kalkrand. During questioning, he admitted to bumping the pickup but claimed he fled the scene out of fear. It was further established that he was not in possession of a valid driver’s licence for operating heavy trucks.

The truck driver has been arrested and is detained at Keetmanshoop Police Station. He faces charges of culpable homicide, failure to ascertain the nature of injuries and render assistance, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
