Road accidents claim 80 lives in less than two months
Eighty (80) lives have been lost to road accidents in Namibia between 15 November 2024 and 5 January 2025, according to statistics released by the Namibian Police. The festive season has seen 472 road accidents, leaving 918 people injured.
The leading causes of accidents have been attributed to driver behavior, fatigue, speeding, reckless driving, disregarding traffic rules, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Law Enforcement Actions
During this period, authorities issued 1,867 warnings and 12,227 summonses to motorists. Additionally, 657 vehicles were confiscated as part of efforts to ensure road safety.
Warning to Road Users
As the holiday season concludes and schools prepare to reopen, increased traffic is anticipated. Nampol’s chief spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, urged motorists to exercise caution.
"Road safety remains a shared responsibility," Shikwambi stated. "We warn road users to be patient, stay alert, and obey traffic rules. Drivers should also prepare for changeable weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, which can lead to flash floods, slippery road surfaces, and damaged infrastructure."
The statistics serve as a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance and adherence to road safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.
