Oshikoto: Accidents claimed 50 lives last year
News in short
During the 2023/2024 financial year, the Oshikoto Region recorded over 200 car crashes, during which at least 50 people died.
This was revealed by governor Penda Ya Ndakolo during his State of the Region Address (SORA) last Friday. He said road crashes remain a concern, and appealed to motorists to change their attitude on the road.
“During the period under review, a total of 217 crashes were recorded in the region, resulting in 482 injuries and 50 fatalities,” Ya Ndakolo said.
“Rollovers accounted for the highest number of crashes, followed by pedestrian-related crashes and collisions, at 28%, 25% and 21% respectively.”
He added that the high number of rollovers and pedestrian-related cases - which stood at 60 and 55 respectively - point to speeding as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.
