Floods: Relocation site identified for affected Windhoek residents
Eight houses washed away
Efforts to clear riverbeds are also ongoing to mitigate future flooding risks.
Staff from the City of Windhoek visited potential relocation sites on Monday to assist households affected by the recent floods in Havana and Otjomuise. Roads such as Matshitshi, Mersin, and Ganzi were severely impacted, with 282 households and a total of 1,189 residents affected. Eight houses were completely washed away in the floods.
Swift response
The City of Windhoek has initiated actions to temporarily relocate affected households to safer, higher ground. A potential relocation site has been identified in Goreangab, where preparations for clearing and setting up the area are already underway. Temporary shelters in the form of tents are being provided, and food parcels are being distributed with support from the Office of the Prime Minister. Efforts to clear riverbeds are also ongoing to mitigate future flooding risks.
Call for cooperation
“We ask residents for patience and cooperation while we implement these temporary relief measures,” a City representative stated. “Please note that these measures are intended to support those who are truly in need. We urge everyone to act responsibly and not to take advantage of these measures.”
