War-torn Libya is happier than Namibia
Namibians are some of the unhappiest people in the world even though the country still ranks as one of the happiest on the continent.
Namibia took the 39th place as the unhappiest country across the globe, or, in other words, the 119th happiest country in the world. The World Happiness Report is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness and ranked 156 countries by their happiness levels.
The rankings were based on averages taken from 2015 to 2017. Finland ranked as the happiest country in the 2018 report, followed by Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland. Published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the rankings are based on people's assessments of their well-being in Gallup World Poll surveys. The top nations, the report says, “tend to have high values for all six key variables that have been found to support well-being: income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity.”
Namibia scored a total of 4.4 out of ten in comparison to top-ranking countries such as Finland with a score of 7.6. The unhappiest countries globally are Yemen, Tanzania, South Sudan, Central African Republic and Burundi. Burundi, which is ranked last out of all the countries, has a score of 2.9.
Just missing the top ten happiest countries in Africa, Namibia is ranked at 11th on the continent.
Countries such as Mauritius, Libya, Algeria, Nigeria and South Africa were ranked as the happiest countries in Africa. In 2016 Namibia was ranked as the eighth happiest country in Africa and the 113th happiest country in the world.
