FNB and Kayec serve Rundu youth
A partnership between two local organisations to help learners in rural areas succeed in their studies is proving to be a good investment.
First National Bank Namibia partnered with the Katutura Youth Enterprise Centre (Kayec) Trust in September last year to create after-school services for youth in the Kehemu location at Rundu.
The FNB Foundation Trust provided N$415 000 to the Kayec Trust to ensure that 142 learners, aged between 12 and 18, were given educational and personal support by the Kayec Youth Development Centre.
In a statement issued this week, FNB Namibia said it was pleased to announce that no school dropouts had followed its support to these pupils.
Stressing the significance of these results, the bank said schools in the area typically faced a scourge of teenage pregnancies which caused girls to drop out of school at a rate 1.4 times higher than the national average.
Using the bank-sponsored funding, Kayec provides learners with academic enrichment classes every weekday afternoon. It has two full-time staff and a team of 15 skilled volunteers.
Disciplines taught include mathematics, English, accounting, sports, agriculture, culture, leadership training and discussions around relationships.
As the only major youth organisation operating in Rundu, Kayec has received compliments for its work, and the organisation says it was invited by Rundu schools to teach life skills to an additional 818 students this year.
The organisation also recently teamed up with local social workers to do outreach work in Rundu’s Sauyema location, including among drug-addicted youth.
