Seven members of the same household were arrested at Olukonda village in the Oshikoto Region last week for child abuse.

The suspects – all aged between 20 and 51 – allegedly tied a 15-year-old girl to a tree with a rope and proceeded to beat her all over her body with a fan belt.

According to the police, the victim is accused of having stolen N$200.

The suspects are due to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court this week for violating the Child Care and Protection Act.

Police spokesperson, Inspector Ellen Nehale, said the incident took place on Saturday, 11 January, but was only reported on Tuesday, 23 January, when the victim started school.

“For safety reasons, the victim has been placed at Onandjokwe State Hospital by a social worker,” she said.

The victim hails from Onamulunga-B village and attends a local school.

Her 42-year-old uncle is among the seven suspects. The other suspects include two Namibian women – aged 27 and 32 – who are both from Onamulunga village as well as a 26-year-old Namibian man.

Two men – aged 20 and 51 – and a 42-year-old woman, all from the Okaloko-Olukonda village, round out the suspects.

All the suspects live in the same house as the victim.
