RA lauded for road infrastructure
Sierre Leone’s transport minister Dennis Sandy has lauded the Roads Authority (RA), saying it is an example worth emulating.
He made the comments following a benchmarking exercise in Namibia by members of Sierre Leone’s transport sector.
Namibia’s successes in achieving the number-one spot on the African continent came down to the maintenance of an effective road transport management system, Sandy said.
According to him, the model the RA implemented would be copied and utilised in Sierra Leone.
“At the core of it, we’ve come to see it’s the road management system. We’ve had numerous attempts at having such a system... Having interacted with the Namibian RA, the actions taken to preserve and maintain [the system], and even their quest to improve it... These are some of the lessons we will take back,” he said.
“To have a successful roads authority like the one in Namibia, it does not only depend on the humans, it also depends on the technology.”
Transport minister John Mutorwa said Namibia was grateful to be recognised for its road infrastructure.
Namibia's overall global ranking for road quality was number 21 in 2020, up from 28 previously. The ranking means Namibia retains the top spot for road infrastructure in Africa, ahead of South Africa and Rwanda.
