Only eight weeks to register SIM cards
News in short
Almost eight weeks before the SIM-registration deadline, less than half of the country’s cellphone users have been registered.
According to the information and communication technology ministry, by September, this number stood at almost 30%.
In the National Assembly, deputy minister Emma Theofelus said the ministry is closely monitoring the ongoing registration process and will review the measures implemented by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN).
She encouraged all SIM card holders to register them within the next two months to avoid deactivation.
Theofelus revealed this last Thursday in response to questions from Popular Democratic Movement parliamentarian Maximilian Katjimune. He had asked why CRAN did not set up registration centres at municipalities and regional council offices. He also wanted to know whether the 31 December deadline could be extended.
Theofelus said CRAN had encountered resistance from administrators, as well as reluctance from certain sections of the public. She gave no further details. - Brigitte Weidlich
