Bibles to be translated to local languages

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (Elcin) - through the Bible Society of Namibia - has asked its congregants to each donate N$20 to raise N$2 million for the printing of the holy book in local languages.

In a letter dated 9 April, Reverend Johannes Simaneka Nkoti wrote to Gloria Dei Elcin Church in Ongwediva, appealing for financial assistance for a group of vernacular Bible translators based in Ondangwa.

Nkoti said both the local Bible society and that of Angola lack funding to translate and print the holy book in Oshindonga, Oshikwanyama, Khoekhoegowab, Rukwangali and Otjiherero.

“We are looking to you for help; you can assist with the little you can, ranging from N$20 or more per congregant,” the letter read.

Reverend Josefina Shimbome made the announcement in Gloria Dei church on Sunday, and the request was received well by the congregants who immediately started donating to the cause after the service.

Out of stock

As it stands, the Bible is out of stock in Oshikwanyama, Oshindonga, Khoekhoegowab, Rukwangali and Otjiherero.

In a pamphlet, the Bible Society of Namibia wrote: “Help bring Bibles to Namibia. Fund the printing of [Bibles in] our local languages”.

It said it is ‘crucial’ to have the Bibles printed, adding that if 100 000 people give at least N$20 each, it will ‘make a difference’.

Namibia has over three million people and over 90% subscribe to the Christian faith.

On Sunday, Nkoti explained that they aim to raise N$2 million, as this will enable them to cover the cost of ordering materials from China as well as translate and print the Bibles.

He said there is no deadline for the project as it will depend on the funds raised, and how quickly people respond to the church’s plea.

“However, the demand for our local vernacular languages is high. In addition to the congregants' donations, the church will implement several measures to raise funds. These may include organising fundraising events such as bake sales, car washes and charity auctions. Furthermore, the church may reach out to local businesses and community members for sponsorship or donations,” Nkoti said.

Those keen to donate can reach Nkoti at 081 426 708, or deposit money into the Bible Society of Namibia’s FNB Namibia account: 55570917730. Those who donate are urged to use ‘PRINTBIBLES’ as the reference.
