Another school to be built in Lüderitz

A sixth school is set to be built in phases in Lüderitz, courtesy of the //Karas education directorate.

This was confirmed by !Nami #Nus constituency councillor Susan Ndjaleka last week. She could not say when the school is expected to be completed or what it will cost the government, but highlighted that the move comes at an opportune time as the number of school-going children in the town is increasing.

"As we speak now, we sit with schools that have waiting lists of close to 100 learners, and even though we have in the past said that we need a new school, this time around we need it urgently," Ndjaleka told New Era last month.

Currently, Lüderitz has only five government schools - three primary schools, one secondary school and a senior secondary school.

According to !Nami #Nus Primary School principal Bessly Makaula, there is a need for a combined school with both primary and secondary grades.

"Lüderitz Secondary School has 10 grade eight class groups and nine grade nine class groups and they offer technical and vocational education and training [TVET] subjects at the school, so this would be ideal," he said.

Assistance wanted

"While the regional council office received this government investment in the constituency, this new school will need ablution facilities, office blocks and store rooms, which should be part of the immediate phase to function properly next year. The constituency office is appealing to the various captains of industries and friends in education for their assistance in this regard,” Ndjaleka said.

“In addition, we gave a friendly request to the contractor, August 26 Company, to employ local workers and sub-contractors.”

//Karas education director Jasmine Magerman told Namibian Sun that with the economic developments expected in the town due to the rapid growth of the green hydrogen sector, the school would need to be a big one, worth close to N$60 million.

"If we consider the projected economic development envisaged for Lüderitz, and the request that we consider building a combined school building, then the National Planning Commission estimates N$60 million for the construction of such a school, which will include a science lab, computer labs and a library.”
