#JustIn: Ministry of safety ordered to pay N$150 000 after assault claims

Kristien Kruger
In the past week, the High Court in Windhoek ordered the minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security to pay N$50 000 in three separate cases of assault brought by two inmates and one citizen.

The court found in each case that there was sufficient evidence to prove that employees of the ministry assaulted the plaintiffs.

One plaintiff was an inmate at Hardap Correctional Facility in Mariental and the other an inmate of Windhoek Central Prison. Both inmates alleged that they were assaulted by prison wardens.

The other claim was brought by a Katutura resident who stated that he was assaulted by members of the Namibian Police (Nampol) and Namibian Defence Force (NDF).
