Govt dismisses presidential succession rumours
News in short
The government, through the information and communication technology ministry, has rubbished reports that it is currently conducting a high-level investigation to determine whether mistakes were made when late statesman Hage Geingob was succeeded by President Nangolo Mbumba.
In a statement, the ministry said: "Namibia, as a constitutional democracy, guarantees to its citizens the fundamental freedom of speech and expression which is entrenched under Article 21 of the Namibian Constitution".
"Whilst the above-referred-to debate may be constructive and healthy in a democratic state, the government is profoundly concerned about the misleading interpretations, reports and what appears to be deliberate misinformation on the issue of the recent presidential succession. This deliberate misinformation is unfortunate.”
The ministry said Mbumba's term of office will come to an end on 21 March 2025.
"Government, therefore, categorically rejects reports in some print media that government is currently conducting a high-level investigation to determine whether or not there were mistakes in the process of succession," it stressed.
