Rhino poaching increases to 57

ELLANIE SMIT
The number of rhinos that have already been poached this year stands at 57, compared to the 44 rhinos that were killed by poachers last year. Spokesperson for the environment ministry, Romeo Muyunda, confirmed to Namibian Sun that two white rhinos were poached on private farms last week.

He said that although poaching has occurred recently in the Etosha National Park, there was no rhino poaching last week in the park. He was however not able to provide the recent figures.

"I can confirm that there has been poaching of rhinos reported around the country. Once incident was reported at a private farm near Waterberg and another on a farm near the airport (Hosea Kutako International Airport.)

On both farms, poachers also injured another rhino.

"We have also in the past experienced or discovered poached carcasses in Etosha. There has not been any poaching in the previous week in the park."

In 2021, 42 rhinos were poached, while in 2019, 57 were poached, compared to 83 in 2018 and 55 in 2017.
