Windhoek announces increased water use restrictions

The City of Windhoek has announced drastic water-saving measures in response to severe water supply challenges. In a statement, the municipality announced the implementation of water restriction measures under a Category D drought, effective 1 September, with a mandatory 15% water savings target.

Under the Category D water management plan, watering flowerbeds is restricted to twice a week by hand only, and watering of trees and shrubs is limited to once a week. Turf grass may only be watered with semi-purified water is permitted, while private lawns may only be watered once weekly.

Swimming pools may not be filled with drinking water, and pools must remain covered.

The operating hours of public pools will be reduced,and businesses are required to recycle water. The hospitality sector is also required to restrict laundry schedules.
