More tourists in hot water over photos
SA couple photographed information board at base
Another South African couple has been arrested after allegedly taking a photo of Grootfontein's military base.
A South African couple was arrested on Tuesday at Grootfontein after allegedly taking cellphone photos of an information board at the military base in the town.
According to Otjozondjupa Region police spokesperson, Inspector Maureen Mbeha, the couple - aged 60 and 65 - is in custody and was scheduled to appear in the Grootfontein Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Mbeha told Namibia Media Holdings that the couple was spotted by members of the military when they allegedly took photos of the board at around 11:30 on Tuesday. They were driving a gray bakkie with a Gauteng number plate.
The board is located within a military zone. Military personnel who saw them filed a complaint with the police. They were then reportedly escorted by military personnel to the town's police station.
Mbeha said the couple has been charged with violating Section 55.1 of the Defence Act, which prohibits photographing a military base.
Staff at the Grootfontein Magistrate's Court said the couple had not yet made their initial court appearance by yesterday afternoon at around 15:00.
The two South Africans allegedly entered Namibia on 5 June and are expected to return to home on 29 June.
This follows the arrest of another South African couple last June after they were found taking photos of military equipment inside the base. Walter and Cornelia Dalton were released on bail of N$5 000 each, while charges of trespassing are still being investigated.
