Sanitation a fundamental right – Schlettwein
News in short
Sanitation is not just a basic need, but a fundamental right that empowers individuals and transforms communities.
This according to agriculture, water and land reform minister Calle Schlettwein, who was speaking at the 13th ordinary session of the general meeting of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) in Cairo, Egypt, last week.
“It is the cornerstone of health, education and economic growth,” he said, adding that access to safe sanitation improves health outcomes, opens doors to quality education and creates opportunities for economic prosperity.
The meeting was held to consider and guide the implementation of AMCOW decisions and interventions, including programmes, budgets and technical reports by the secretariat and other committees.
It also aimed to seek guidance on preparations for the development of a post-2025 Africa Water Vision.
