Police urge caution when crossing water
News in short
Police in the Oshana, Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions have advised the public to cross water with caution, adding that drowning incidents have been reported recently.
This follows abundant rainfall in the northern regions - which has been embraced by local subsistence farmers, but has left those without access to proper roads distraught.
Oshana community affairs officer, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, said the most recent drowning involved a 53-year-old man who was found dead in a water pan on Wednesday at Eendamambali Oshipumbushomugongo village.
The deceased has been identified as Wellem Johannes from Eenguwantale village.
Aiyambo said Johannes’ body was discovered by an Angolan cattle herder.
Family members said the deceased was last seen on Tuesday at nearby cuca shops, and that he did not return home that day.
“The deceased, according to his sister, sometimes used to stay overnight in nearby houses when he went to the cuca shops,” Aiyambo said, explaining why his family was not worried when he had not returned home that night.
